Heart Failure

Services

The Heart Centre at St Paul’s provides a range of services for people living with heart failure.
In hospital, a highly experienced team of cardiologists, nurses and allied health professionals will care for you.
For outpatients a heart function clinic is available.

Assessment
In order to find out what caused your heart failure and if it can be treated, some tests may need to be done when you first come to the Heart Centre. Some of these tests may include:
Echocardiography
ECG
Angiogram
Nuclear testing

Treatment
Most people who have heart failure have it for the rest of their lives. This means taking lifelong medications, taking steps to make the symptoms less and keeping in touch with the doctor.
There are many medications used to treat heart failure, but they fall into distinct categories. For more information visit the Heart Failure Society of America website.

Other treatments can sometimes include heart surgery such as heart bypass, valve replacement or transplant and some patients benefit from small devices that are implanted into the body such as pacemakers and implantable defibrillators.

To find out more information about heart failure and it’s treatments, visit the Heart Failure Society of America website.

Education and self-care
The nurses in the cardiac wards and the heart function clinic will spend time with you teaching you about your illness. They will also give you information about how you can manage your illness at home and what to do if there is a problem. They will give you written information to help remind you.
