Heart Surgery

Introduction

Your doctor has informed you that you will be having your cardiac (heart) surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital.

Cardiac surgery offers you a treatment for your heart condition and a chance to return to your old activities and pursue new activities with renewed energy and health.

All members of the care team will provide advice and coaching to support you during your operation and recovery in hospital. However, you are the person who is most responsible for your recovery. Being informed and planning ahead can make your surgery, recovery and rehabilitation much smoother.

This guide is especially written for patients having cardiac surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital, and for your family and friends. It is designed to help you understand what your cardiac surgery, recover, and rehabilitation involve and the important role you play in your recovery. This information does not replace medical advice. You should contact your doctor for details specific to your surgery.

It is our hope that this guide will answer some questions and give food for thought for others. Write down any questions that you may have. These can be directed to your doctor, nurse or any member of your health care team.
