A trasesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is an ultrasound of your heart that uses the esophagus (the tube that is the passage way to your stomach) to look at your heart.
The purpose of the test is to check:
- Your heart function
- The valves in your heart
- The size, shape and movement of the different parts of your heart
- For any fluid leakage into the sac surrounding your heart
If your doctor has ordered a TEE for you, please carefully read the (hyperlink) Transesophagel Echocardiogram Patient Information [pdf]
It is especially important to note that:
- You must not eat or drink anything after midnight.
- You must arrange for someone to take you home after the test as we will give you medicine that makes you sleepy.
